Bettye LaVette - Blackbirds |
We were thrilled to feature vocalist Bettye LaVette as our 32 Bar Blues Voice of the Art a few seasons ago, so when we learned of her new album and the opportunity to include her work in our special Jazz Foundation collection, we jumped at the chance. "Blackbirds" pays tribute to some of Bettye's favorite female singers and the music that she loved when she was coming up - from Billie Holiday and Nina Simone to Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson.
Coinciding with her induction into the Blues Music Hall of Fame, Blackbirds - which takes its name from The Beatles' song about race relations in the U.S. - is a powerful collection of blues, soul and funk fusion that deeply resonates in our current social climate. From the sparse and haunting "Strange Fruit" to the closing-time punch of "I Hold No Grudge," this is music best heard with good audio and a glass of something strong. As fans and critics agree, Bettye doesn't just sing songs, she inhabits them.
Of special note, the album is produced by renowned drummer and creative force Steve Jordan, who also serves as Artistic Director for the Jazz Foundation of America. So with gratitude to Bettye and Steve for this beautiful work, we're sending all profits received from the sale of the CD directly to the JFA's Musicians' Emergency Fund. |
