Poet, guitarist, singer, bluesman. All heart, Smither's music is a thing of profound beauty. For close to 50 years Chris Smither has been touring the small (and large) stages of the country playing his unique blend of folk blues, sharing his wisdom, tapping his restless foot, moving his warm, gravelly, baritone voice. Steeped in the southern blues roots of musicians like Mississippi John Hurt, Smither's music and wit have aged and become as complex as the topics he covers.
Of Hundred Dollar Valentine, his 12th album, the publication Mojo said, Hundred Dollar Valentine contains, "deep, sad, wise songs, allied to perfectly crafted arrangements, from a man who's lived long enough in darkness to address the big, heavy questions with a lightness of touch." Perhaps no surprise that a number of his songs over the years have appeared on Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall's albums. Here's to a man who's paid his dues and to the tracks he's left us. Happy listening. Happy trails. Thank you, Chris.
