Gregory Porter - Take Me To The Alley |
"I have these ancestors on my shoulders that I don't want to disappoint." - Gregory Porter
Gregory Porter could sing the pages of a phonebook and fill every seat in the house. Such is the instant and wide appeal of his soulful baritone voice. But it's not just the tone of his instrument that moves audiences; it's the way he plays it. Like Nat King Cole, he dips and soars around a melody, and the emotional range of Bill Withers shines through his songs. What makes him a true original is his songwriting; he crafts poetic tales of love, family and humanity that push the genre boundaries of his jazz setting.
"Take Me To The Alley" is Porter's fourth record and it comes on the heels of an album that brought him international fame, numerous jazz accolades, and a Grammy win. After all that attention, this work feels more inward and personal. There are two songs about his young son and three for his mom, who, while dying of cancer, encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Porter once told a reporter, "The thing I always remember when I'm writing my songs is something my mom said: 'Sing with understanding.' I don't want to blow my gift on nonsense." "Take Me To The Alley" was released on his mother's birthday.
