At the young age of 29, guitarist Julian Lage has already enjoyed a two-decade career in music. A wunderkind jazz and blues player, Lage recorded with David Grisman at 11, performed alongside Gary Burton at the Grammys at 13, and has been a faculty member at the Stanford University Jazz Workshop since 15. In the footsteps of legendary players like John Scofield and Bill Frisell, Lage's genre-crossing virtuosity is vibrant and seamless; his roots "tangled in jazz, folk, classical and country music" as The New York Times put it.
On the album, "Arclight," Lage and his Telecaster swing the mood from tender to raucous, mixing slow hand vibrato with deep, R&B-style bent notes; and refined melodies with what he calls "cowboy chords that tug at your ear a little." And on "Mount Royal," Lage's latest collaboration with guitarist Chris Eldridge, the two artists blend jazz with bluegrass - trading rich rhythm and melody parts like a polished duo rather than competing soloists.
