Steven Huff - A Pig In Paris |
Steven Huff's career as a writer and poet has been a zig-zag walk. He has been a retail bookseller, an editor/publisher, freelance copyeditor, and creative writing teacher, and he worked as a librarian although he didn't have a library degree and wasn't paid like a real one. He has also been a cook, a foundry laborer, taxi driver, café singer, and other trades he's mostly forgotten. He would still like to try bartending. Currently he teaches creative writing in the Solstice MFA program at Pine Manor College, and is founding editor/publisher at Tiger Bark Press, a small literary publishing house. He occasionally tutors Greek. From 1996 through 2003 he was publisher at BOA Editions, Ltd., one of the nation's foremost poetry publishing houses. He is the author of two collections of poetry, More Daring Escapes, and The Water We Came From, and a collection of stories, A Pig in Paris. He is a Pushcart Prize winner in fiction. From 2002 through 2007, he had a regular show called Fiction in Shorts on WXXI-FM, the Public Radio station in Rochester, NY. He considers himself a late bloomer, mostly because he spent so many years working in factories and warehouses. But the experiences of those years also gave his fiction and to some degree his poetry a perspective on American life that he would have missed if he had gone the academic route from the beginning. His fictional characters drive old cars that often won't start, the rent is past due, the food in the fridge is over the sell-by date, and someone is usually opening a wrong door. But someone is always in love, too, and always chasing something. Otherwise, there would be no story.
