Sven Birkerts - The Other Walk Essays |
Memoirist and literary critic, editor of AGNI and author of 9 books, Sven Birkerts has built a vast life of letters, "the best words in the best order…strengthening the self's endurance odds by whatever it is that insists on being said." He has received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation, reviewed extensively for the NYT Book Review, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and countless other publications and written provocatively about reading and writing in the electronic age. But he may be at his finest and most memorable in the short personal essay.
For Birkerts, the essay is a distillation, a richly personal meditation, almost poem-like, a journey around the block or around the imagination, "a gentle reminder that we can find life's fullness amid the most inconsequential moments" (Shelf Awareness). His most recent book, The Other Walk: Essays, contains 45 short essays on family, writing, friendship and the random objects of a life fully experienced. Deeply moving, alternately humorous, they survive multiple readings. Pure music - one of 10 books we'd take with us to that proverbial desert island.
